Respect the Island, Travel Responsibly
Hawaiʻi’s ocean currents and ocean conditions require constant vigilance and deep respect.
Ocean Safety Practices
Swim Caution
Sneaker Waves & Rocks
High-Risk Coastal Spots
Choose lifeguarded beaches whenever possible. Check current ocean and weather conditions, observe the water for 20 minutes before entering, and never turn your back on the waves.
Always snorkel with a buddy and stay strictly within your swimming capability. Strong currents and fatigue develop rapidly; consider using a flotation aid in open water.
Unexpected large waves can suddenly wash over dry rocks and exposed ledges. Stay well back from wet coastal rock shelves and keep your eyes on the horizon.
Attractions like Queen’s Bath can become lethal during high surf or rain. Obey all posted closures and signs—never venture past warning barriers because other tourists are present.
Protecting Wildlife & Community
Caring for the ʻāina (land), native species, and local communities ensures Kauaʻi remains vibrant.
Protecting Native Wildlife
Responsible Camping
Respecting Local Culture
Observe Hawaiian monk seals, sea turtles, and native birds from a respectful distance. Never touch, feed, chase, or crowd protected wildlife on beaches or trails.
Camp only in legal designated sites with required permits. Pack out all trash, leave sites spotless, honor quiet hours, and protect delicate plant life.
Honor private property, residential neighborhoods, and sacred cultural sites. Follow all parking regulations and treat the community and environment with care.
